WhatsApp Header Types Explained: Text vs Image vs Video vs Document

A WhatsApp template header can be text, an image, a video, or a document, or none at all. Here's how to choose.

The header is the first thing a customer sees in a WhatsApp template, appearing above the main message body. WhatsApp supports five header options.

None

The simplest option — straight into the message body. Fine for short, purely informational utility messages like OTPs or simple confirmations.

Text

A short bolded line above the body — good for reinforcing the message's purpose at a glance ("Order Update," "Appointment Reminder").

Image

Strong for product showcases, before/after visuals, or anything where seeing something matters more than reading about it.

Video

Higher engagement potential but heavier to produce and larger file sizes — best reserved for genuinely video-worthy content, like a quick product demo, not used by default.

Document

For sharing something the customer needs to keep — a price list, a brochure, an invoice.

Choosing well

More visual doesn't always mean better — an image header on a simple appointment reminder can feel like unnecessary weight. Match the header type to what's actually being communicated. Learn more at heygrowfy.com (link this text to https://www.heygrowfy.com).
