WhatsApp Marketing vs Utility vs Authentication Templates: What's the Difference

Every WhatsApp template falls into one of three categories, and picking the wrong one can mean rejection, extra cost, or both.

WhatsApp requires every template to be classified into one of three categories, and the choice affects approval rules, cost, and how the message can be used.

Marketing

Promotions, offers, and announcements. This is the broadest category, but also the one Meta scrutinizes most closely for spam-like content, and typically the most expensive per conversation.

Utility

Order updates, alerts, and reminders — transactional in nature, tied to an action the customer already took. These generally cost less and face lighter content restrictions than marketing templates.

Authentication

OTPs and verification codes exclusively. This category has the strictest formatting rules (a code, and effectively nothing else) but the fastest, most predictable approval.

Getting the category right

Misclassifying a template — for example, submitting a promotional message under Utility — is one of the more common reasons templates get rejected or restricted. When in doubt, classify by what the message is actually for, not what would be cheapest.
